One common question that always gets asked is: "I love CGC graded concert posters but how do I frame and display them? To our current knowledge, the collector has 3 different options as follows:

1) Remove the poster from the holder and frame as usual. The main benefit to buying CGC graded and authenticated posters is you gain far greater confidence that you are getting exactly what you paid for.

Let's face it, there are many different printings for most issues, there are counterfeit and bootleg posters floating around, and a HUGE percentage of surviving posters have professional restoration that can only be detected by a trained eye.

In today's quality conscious market where originality is highly prized, value is directly correlated to state of preservation. Very small differences in quality can mean HUGE differences in price. Given these market realities, why would you want to take someone's word for the condition a poster is in when that person has a direct conflict of interest? Some of our clients tell us they believe the CGC information provided, (Band, venue, date, artists, condition, etc.) adds to the viewing experience.

This option is a simple procedure that can be handled by any frame shop. Simply "float" the poster in a larger frame. The advantage of this option is that any frame shop can do it, you will have the security and peace of mind that the poster is protected in CGC's airtight holder, and the poster will command a premium price when it comes tie to sell since it will already be CGC graded and authenticated.

3) Frame your CGC poster in the holder with a mat hiding the CGC holder.

A third option is to frame the poster in the CGC holder, but completely hide the holder using a mat. The advantage of this option is that you get the safety and security of the CGC holder while having the same optical experience of framing the poster out of the holder.

How to find out what your vintage concert posters and handbills are really worth.

Every day we receive calls from around the world, asking us what their vintage concert posters and handbills are worth. There are many different answers to this question, depending on the actual information the collector is seeking. Let’s start at the beginning.

First, it must be understood that with every collectible, condition is a major determinant of value. The same exact poster can be worth wildly different amounts. A rare poster that is heavily beat up, with multiple tears, tack holes and paper missing can be worth $1,000, while the same issue could be worth $10,000, if it is in flawless museum quality condition.  

This situation becomes even more complicated at the higher end of the quality spectrum. A very rare poster that has just one tiny flaw such a single pinhole, or ¼ inch tear, could be worth $3,000, while the same issue without that single tiny flaw can be worth $10,000.

This means that ALL vintage concert posters and handbills have to be inspected in person, by a trained expert, in order to get a meaningful valuation.

Secondly, there are several different valuations that can be ascertained. First, there is “Book Value”, which can be determined by past sales data. Book Value tells the collector what the poster has traded for in the past. This number can be a guide for the collector, but Book Value still has it’s limitations.

For example, if a poster sells at auction for $2,000, the collector must understand that there are fees involved in selling. The consigner of the poster would have received $1500-$1600 for the poster, after having waited several weeks or months for the auction to be conducted, and for the money to be collected. While this is not that big of a deal when it comes to one single poster, the deduction of these selling fees can really add up when you are talking about a large collection of many items.

Also, the $2,000 gross number pertains to a sale that has already happened at a specific date and time in the past. Like any market, conditions are fluid and this same poster, if put back on the market, could bring $1500 next time…or $2500.

The point is, while past auction data provides an excellent base of information for valuation, it does not tell the collector what they can definitely receive for their posters right now, TODAY.

The second type of valuation is often referred to as an “Insurance Appraisal or Valuation”. This type of valuation refers to what it would cost to replace a vintage concert poster if it was lost or stolen.

An Insurance Appraisal has the same challenges a Book Value appraisal, only in reverse. Just because a poster in your collection brought $2,000 in a past auction, that in no way means it can be replaced for that amount. In many cases, vintage concert posters and handbills are so rare, that it can be several years before another one becomes available for purchase, in equal condition. It’s anyone’s guess when, where and for how much that poster would cost you to replace!

Even more complicated are unique, one of a kind rarities. These pieces are literally priceless, as they only trade when a willing seller and a willing buyer agree amongst themselves on the valuation of the item. This value will be determined based on those two people’s collective knowledge and needs—and very little else!

Boom! Major 1960’s Museum Retrospective Touches Down in London!

Second Order Effects of CGC Grading Part 2

In previous blogs we have discussed there are two different ways that CGC is affecting today’s market for Vintage Rock Concert posters. 


One group of effects can be called “First Order Effects”, which are obvious to all onlookers. Specifically, these “First Order” effects include 1) increased media attention, 2) this increased media attention results in a huge increase in NEW collectors that can now collect with confidence. 3) Since this rise in demand is chasing the same small supply, values go up. 4) And since dealers can easily quote buy prices for CGC graded posters sight unseen, liquidity is increased. 5) Also, since third party grading is inherently about distinguishing differences in quality, there is a huge focus on quality.

Not so obvious, are many second order effects of third party CGC grading that will also effect today’s rapidly growing marketplace for these rare artworks. Today, we will examine one second order effect which is INCREASED LIQUIDITY.

Every single day, we receive numerous calls and inquiries from people all over the world that have posters that they wish to sell to us or consign in our auction. The question is always the same, what can you pay for XXXXXX poster. Unless the poster is a famous one of a kind rarity, our answer is always the same, “It depends vastly on the condition and making sure the poster is authentic. If the poster had been third party authenticated and graded by CGC, this problem would obviously be eliminated. The buyer would know exactly what he is getting and he would not be relying on the seller’s opinion at all.

In conclusion, the introduction of independent third party grading into any collectibles market drastically increases the liquidity of what’s being collected because the number of transactions explodes upward due to the increased ease in both buying and selling. In short, everyone wins!

The CGC Rock Poster Revolution—Where We Are Now!

As The CGC Rock Poster Revolution continues to unfold, it’s important to remember the BIG PICTURE of where this market was and where it’s going.


For many years, we implored our clientele to buy the highest quality posters they could, and to pay the small premium at the time (usually less than double a damaged copy) to acquire the best examples they could. This advice proved to be prescient and the collectors that acted on this recommendation are sitting pretty today. But the collectors that bought quality in the past were the equivalent to angel investors who bought stock in private companies with a hope and a prayer that they will someday go public. The purchase may pan out, and it may not.

Today’s market is very different. CGC grading is now a reality. The future is far more clear cut and easier to understand. CGC grading of rock concert posters has now “gone public”, and buying today, at today’s price levels is like buying stock in a company when it first goes public.

Let’s look at a few of the most COMMON United States coins, and the premiums attached to high grade examples. 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar MS60 (Equal to CGC 9.0) $40 , MS66 (Equal to CGC 9.4) $212, MS67 (Equal to CGC 9.8) $580.00 1945 Walking Liberty Half Dollar MS60 $31, MS66 $118, MS67 $635. 1901-S $5.00 Liberty Gold Piece MS60 $350, MS66 $2800, MS67 $10,000

Please note the above examples are the smallest premiums seen for the most common of all coins. Most coins bring FAR HIGHER premiums as the grade ascends! And the examples above are for coins where tens of millions were made and many tens of thousands exist in MS60 or higher. Clearly, CGC graded posters offered today WILL NOT bring 15-30 times what a lesser graded, non CGC graded example would bring. And that represents an opportunity. Based on all other collectibles, we believe it WILL BE POSSIBLE to see similar premiums in the not too distant future.

We believe the focus on top quality concert posters that began several years ago will continue and accelerate. You have this knowledge, the only question now is what you will do with it!

Rare CGC Comic Book Brings Record $956,000! Last week a 1938 Action Comics #1 comic book that was graded by CGC made national news headlines when it brought a staggering $956,000 at auction! 


This event is notable for many reasons. First, read the first two lines of the auction lot description:

It's the holy grail of comic collecting, and we've never auctioned a higher-graded, unrestored copy! In the nearly 15 years since our first auction, we've offered a total of 18 complete copies of the iconic issue, but only nine of those had earned the CGC blue Universal label awarded to an unrestored copy.

The auctioneer clearly explains the importance that this comic book is CGC graded, UNRESTORED, and HIGH GRADE. Furthermore, this is a NUMBER ONE, and readers of this blog are very familiar of the ultra high desirability of a NUMBER ONE in collectibles. The Secret of Specialization

Any seasoned collector will tell you that one of the main keys to success is specialization. Why?


The answer is really pretty simple. Specialization allows you to tilt the odds for collecting success in your favor by allowing you to gain knowledge and expertise that exceeds what is generally known on a topic.

And just like everything else in life, knowledge and expertise = power and success.

For example, specialization will allow you to know about specific issues that are rarer or more common than generally believed, you’ll meet and know the other sophisticated players in your specialty, and you’ll be able to identify mis-priced opportunities both at auction and in dealer inventories. Also, once you are known in the collecting community for a specific specialty, you will be the first to be offered opportunities and deals that pertain to your area of expertise.

These are just a tiny fraction of the advantages of specialization that immediately come to mind.

Some areas that you might consider specializing in when it comes to Vintage Concert posters are as follows:

Specialize in posters by a particular poster artist, specialize in the posters of a particular band, specialize in the posters of a specific venue, specialize in the posters of a particular band, or posters from a specific year.

Bootleg Alert! Poster : Grateful Dead , Jenison Field house 3/13/71

Through careful research and a collaborative effort from within the Concert Poster Community, we can conclusively announce the discovery of a stash of forged copies of this extremely rare and highly sought after Grateful Dead poster. 


All collectors should proceed with extreme caution when contemplating the acquisition of this rare issue and receive iron clad Guarantees of Authenticity from any seller. In January, 2014, PAE was privileged to auction the first known example of a poster advertising the Grateful Dead at Jenison Field House, in East Lansing Michigan, on the campus of Michigan State University. The concert was held on March 13, 1971 and the artist was Hugh Surratt.

Shortly after our sale, this poster began frequently appearing in auctions and dealer inventories throughout the nation. Curiously, each example that surfaces exhibited the exact same wear, water damage, pinholes and discoloration.

Here are the definitive measurements of authentic copies. There are currently two copies known, one that came from the artist and another still retained by the artist.

The authentic poster is printed on thin stock and the overall dimensions are 17 13/16” x 24 5/16” . The upper rectangular image exhibiting the Sun and Grateful Dead legend measures 5 9/16 “ x 15 ¾”. The lower rectangular image that exhibits a portrait of the band measures 15 ¾” x 15 7/16” . The top border of the poster measures 1 ½ “ and the bottom border measures 1 9/16” . The left border of the poster is 1” and the right border measures 1 1/16. “

The easiest way to detect bootleg copies is by the telltale aging that was executed by the counterfeiter. The bootleg copies are is printed on heavy paper and have been artificially aged yellow on the front and is white on the back. The fake copies also exhibit moisture ripples and staple holes.

The overall dimensions of the counterfeit copies are 17 3/16 x 23 9/16”. The upper rectangular image of the Sun and Grateful Dead legend measures 5 7/16” x 15 ¼”. The lower rectangular image showing a portrait of the band measures 14 15/16” x 15 ¼” . The top border of the fake poster is 1 3/8” the bottom border is 1 7/16”. The left border of counterfeit copies measures 1 1/16” the right border equals 1 ½”.

All of the bootleg copies can be traced back to a Craig’s List seller in Wisconsin by the name of Mike.

The Dead Come Alive!

Last week we spoke about the “new blood” that is coming into our market and collecting posters for the first time…or the first time in a very long while. 


This new interest is being partly fueled by old “Deadheads” that have now become re-energized and re-engaged by the recent 50th Anniversary Celebration of The Grateful Dead that took place over the July 4th weekend. Many of these long time, devoted fans have gone on to become successful in other areas of their lives, and can afford to own authentic memorabilia that reminds them of their participation in this past era/phenomena.

At the shows in Santa Clara and Chicago, there were tens of thousand of middle aged folks that were attending their first shows in many years. Friendships were renewed, and passions re-awakened. Ever since the 50th Celebration was announced, Grateful Dead memorabilia has been flying out of the safes of collectibles dealers. To make matters even more interesting, this year also marks the 50th Anniversary of “The Sixties”, a social movement that began in 1965.
